Don't Be Trashy, Hun!

Updated: Nov 15, 2019

One of the best places to start your eco-conscious journey is in your own home, and what better way to start than by reducing the waste your household produces. We can do this in a lot of different ways, but it all boils down to is 3 basic changes:

  • BUY MORE CONSCIOUSLY: Choosing products with less packaging, or products packaged in containers that you will be able to reuse (such as glass jars or resealable fabric bags). You can also buy in bulk, even better if you bring your own containers to put it in. But the big-ticket item that will really save the planet, AND a heap of coin… re-think your need. If there’s a chance you don’t really need it, don’t buy it in the first place.

  • BE MORE INFORMED: Look up your local council website and find out exactly what can be recycled and how. You can better utilise your organics/green waste bin, many of us don’t even use this bin! But it can actually handle close to half of the waste that your household produces. If you’re a bit of a gardener, start composting. Also, keep an eye out for businesses that offer other forms of recycling, for example things like batteries (Ikea and Aldi), electrical devices (Bunnings) and scrunchable plastic wrappers (Coles and Woolworths).

  • TALK ABOUT IT: Have regular discussions about making better eco-conscious choices with everyone in your home. If everyone understands their impact, and is on-board with the changes, it will be easier to adapt. It’s also a good idea to label the bins, so that everyone knows exactly which bin is for what kind of waste, when your not around ;p.
